Some amount of hearing loss is normal with age. But the problem also can arise from exposure to loud noise, heredity, certain illnesses and medications. “If you are in a high-noise environment, always wear ear protection. Seek a hearing test if you or your family notice a change in your hearing,” says ear/nose/throat specialist Thomas Koch, M.D., of Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network.
